چکیده

prolonged employment of chemotherapeutic agents. The last decade was the most brillian period in the history of the battle against tuberculosis by chemotherapy. Streptomycin (SM), paraaminosalicylic acid (PAS), 4-acetylaminobenzaldehyde thiosemicarbazone (TB1) and isonicotinic acid hydrazide (INAH) have been proved to be effective in the treatment of tuberculosis. Among them, the resistance development phenomenon of tubercle bacilli to streptomycin has been investigated in extreme detail by many workers. On the contrary, concerning the nature of resistance to other drugs, few bacteriological works have been reported in the completeness enough to be allowed to say something definite of its mechanisms or the association with clinical picture. In this connection, this laboratory attempted the investigation of the resistance of tubercle bacilli to those drugs (TB1, PAS and INAH). This paper deals with data with respect to TB1 as a preliminary report. Since the announcement by Domagk1 that the thiosemicarbazones are effective in vitro and in vivo against tubercle bacilli, TB1 has been used extensively also in this country. And it has been reported by some investigators2, 3, 4, 5, 6 that the tubercle bacillus isolated from the patients treated with TB1 was often resistant to the drug. On the other hand, however, Simmons and his colleagues7, and Mollov and his associates8 stated that the treatment with TB1 did not induce any significant degree of the drug resistance in the bacilli. Those reports cited above were the clinical investigations rather than they were a purely bacteriological analysis. In this connection, we attempted the detailed experiments of the sensitivity and resistance of tubercle bacilli to TB1 in vitro.

On the Response of Genetically Resistant and Susceptible Rabbits to the Quantitative Inhalation of Human Type Tubercle Bacilli and the Nature of Resistance to Tuberculosis

If genetically resistant and susceptible rabbits inhale a certain number of human type tubercle bacilli, no tuberculosis in the lungs of the resistant animals is seen, as a rule several months after infection, while there is a variable and often extensive disease in the susceptible rabbits. The analogy to the presence or absence of active tuberculosis in man infected with the tubercle bacillus ...

The Resistance of Rabbits to Tuberculosis after Vaccination with Partially Defatted Tubercle Bacilli

1. A vaccine prepared from partially defatted bovine tubercle bacilli influenced favorably the survival time after inoculation with living virulent bovine tubercle bacilli. 2. Accompanying this increased resistance was a sustained lymphocytosis in the vaccinated animals. 3. The vaccine induced a transitory anemia and leucopenia. 4. A similar preparation of partially defatted human tubercle baci...

THE DETECTION OF Mycobacterium tuberculosis BY PCR IN SPUTUM SAMPLES FROM LONG-TERMTREATED LEPROSY PATIENTS: ASSOCIATIONS WITH SKIN TEST RESULTS AND IMMUNOTHERAPY WITH Mycobacterium vaccae

As part of a series of investigations at Baba Baghi Leprosarium in lran, 44 long-treated leprosy patients were selected for our study. Samples of early morning sputum were obtained from each patient, examined by microscopy for acid-fast bacilli (AFB), and cultured for tubercle bacilli. These tests were negative, but the polymerase chain reaction (PCR) for an insertion sequence believed to b...

Comparison of techniques for measuring the isoniazid resistance of tubercle bacilli.

As with streptomycin and P.A.S., the introduction of isoniazid for the treatment of tuberculosis has raised the problem of the development of resistance to the drug in strains of tubercle bacilli recovered from treated patients. In the Medical Research Council (1952) trials 71% of cultures from patients who had received three months' treatment with isoniazid alone were found to be resistant. Al...

Catalase activity and isoniazid sensitivity of tubercle bacilli.

sam (1956). Peizer and Widelock (1955), however, failed to find a consistent relationship between isoniazid sensitivity and catalase activity. Since the catalase test is easily performed and gives an immediate result, it would obviously be of value as a presumptive indicator of isoniazid resistance if it were proved to be consistently negative in isoniazid-resistant cultures. In order to obtain...
